I had an email exchange last week with a blog reader who’s facing some personal challenges. In his final note, he ended with the words: “I hope not to lose hope. And I will try to remain positive.”
But Joseph chose hope
His words hit me. I prayed for him but couldn’t stop thinking about him. I resisted the urge to challenge his slightly deflated tone. He’s facing a lot right now and I wanted to give him time to ponder my advice. I know he’s reading this blog post (he always does) and this post is my response to him… and to those on the verge of giving up.
I remembered my reader’s words as I studied Genesis 50 recently. Joseph was sold to slavery at 17. By today’s measure, you can say he lost his youth. He was separated from his family for so many years, including his younger brother.
Maybe he went some days without food and drink as he journeyed with his slave masters to Egypt. Maybe he spent time in solitary confinement. Maybe the thought of giving up crossed his mind a time or two. He had every reason to harbour bitterness. He had every to give up. He had no reason to hope.
But Joseph chose hope.
A few days ago, I had the privilege to counsel and lead a young man at my Student Forum to rededicate his life Christ. At the root of his personal issues was the loss of hope. Life had dealt him a measure of troubles. So he gave up on God in the process. As we shared together, I narrated my story to him. The tears welled up in his eyes.
All he needed was a reason to hope again; a glimmer would be enough. In the end, he got more than a glimmer — he made a commitment to trust and pursue God, against all odds.
Against all odds
Never underestimate the power of your story. The pains and challenges of today serve a greater purpose — a purpose that transcends the present.
Against all odds, you can chose hope today. You need the trials for the testimonies.
“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today” — Genesis 50:20.
There’s a purpose in your present troubles. Allow God chart the course of your life.
Against all odds, I encourage you to trust and hope in God. Never give up!
